1. Ingredients

You can craft a delectable dish with ingredients you probably have lying around in the fridge and pantry.

  • 2 racks pork spare ribs (around 1.5 kg total)
  • Your favourite BBQ rub (or see our recipe below!)
  • 1 cup apple cider or apple juice
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper (to taste)

Or, if you really want to take it easy, grab one of our pre-flavoured or marinated Pork Rib Options. Available in 1kg or 2kg.

Easy Homemade BBQ Rub (Optional):

  • 2 tablespoons paprika
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust for heat preference)
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

  1. Prep the Ribs: Preheat oven to 150°C. Remove the membrane from the back of the ribs, if present. You can ask your butcher to do this for you. Season both sides of the ribs generously with salt, pepper, and your chosen BBQ rub (or the homemade version).

  2. Create the Braising Liquid: In a large saucepan or Dutch oven, combine apple cider, brown sugar, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, white vinegar, and smoked paprika (if using). Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.

  3. Build and Bake: Place the seasoned ribs in a large roasting pan. Pour the braising liquid over the ribs, ensuring they’re evenly coated. Cover the pan tightly with aluminium foil. Bake for 2 ½ – 3 hours, or until the ribs are tender and nearly falling off the bone. Check for doneness by inserting a fork – it should pierce the meat with minimal resistance.

  4. Glaze & Serve (Optional): During the last 30 minutes of baking, increase the oven temperature to 200°C. Remove the foil and brush the ribs with your favourite BBQ sauce (or reserve some of the braising liquid and reduce it over medium heat until thickened for a homemade glaze). Baste the ribs every 5-10 minutes until the glaze is sticky and caramelized.

  5. Enjoy! Serve your oven-baked BBQ spare ribs with your favourite sides like coleslaw, baked beans, or potato salad.

Tips:

  • For a smoky flavour, add a teaspoon of liquid smoke to the braising liquid.
  • Leftover ribs can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently in the oven or microwave until warmed through.
  • Get creative with your BBQ sauce! There are endless flavour possibilities to explore.
